Bec Winnel enjoys being a commercial illustrator, particularly when clients push her into challenging new areas outside her comfort zone. With a background in design, she found her soft, light and beautiful illustration work was so much in demand this is now her full-time focus.
With lots of pets and a love of nature, she likes to go camping and lives in the ideal spot - Mount Beauty, which is in the Kiewa Valley area of Australia. Something not many people know is that she was in the Army Reserves for over a year, has learned Tae Kwon Do, and grew up hunting and fishing.
Bec has a diploma in graphic design and art, which she studied in Melbourne. She’s topped that up with various other art courses.
Whereas plenty of modern illustrators start off traditionally in their sketchbooks and finish their work digitally, Bec does it the other way around . She starts digitally and, using Photoshop and reference images she’ll build up a composition. The artwork is then completed using pens, pastels and watercolours with special attention paid to particular details – usually around the focal-point.
If a client needs amendments, these can be made by scanning the work in and editing it in Photoshop.
Her style is feminine, soft, delicate, detailed, romantic and somewhat nostalgic.
