QUESTION: What drew you to illustration/design?
KAI: Becoming an Illustrator has always been my dream.
QUESTION: Do you have any formal design training? KAI: No, learning things was my motivation.
QUESTION: Where do you live?
KAI: I live in a mixture of imagination and realism and quite naturally in a world of clients requirements and all of that mostly in Hamburg.
QUESTION: Can you describe your studio for me?
KAI: The sanctuary, the treasure box, the "site of crime"… The one room where I spent most of my time.
QUESTION: What is your biggest inspiration?
KAI: Anything original and queer. I love good movies in comfortable cinemas.
QUESTION: How do you get the best ideas?
KAI: I harvest them, when they are ripe from the big tree of imaginations.
QUESTION: What technique do you use?
KAI: With everything that is helpful for the particular job, but mostly digital.
QUESTION: Tell us about a favorite project you have recently completed.
KAI: The foxes for the Fuechschen brewery.
QUESTION: Who are your illustration heroes?
KAI: All of the good illustrators and great images. Gentileschi, Boticelli, Rubens, Pixar.
QUESTION: Do you keep a sketchbook?
KAI: Many, also with loose papers.
QUESTION: What are your hobbies?
KAI: Drawing and painting.
QUESTION: If you were not an illustrator, what would you be?
KAI: Female illustrator.
QUESTION: Who would you like to meet?
KAI: God at eye level.
QUESTION: If you could travel back in time, where would you go to?
KAI: I would have loved to paint an entire cave in the Stone Age and nowadays people would find it and make a big fuss over it.
QUESTION: What kind of music do you listen to?
KAI: Anything inspiring. Classic, Rock, Metal.
QUESTION: What is the funniest thing you have ever done?
KAI: A long time ago, or was it only yesterday? On a lush, but not too lush summer evening, I sat on a meadowy and flavorsome hillock underneath a lovely roof of leaves and furthermore a twinkling and starry sky and drew a picture, when a little multi-armed angel sat down gently on my left shoulder…. but this would lead us too far.
QUESTION: If you won the lottery, would you still work as illustrator?
KAI: Clearly a yes and no.
QUESTION: Do you collect anything?
KAI: Only happy clients.
