Matthew Hollings is a Manchester-based illustrator known for excellent portraiture and lifestyle imagery. He was introduced to the idea of becoming an illustrator by his friend’s Dad, who was a cartoonist. Matthew used to relish visiting his studio, looking at the racks of marker pens, watercolours, paintbrushes and sifting through old AOI contact books.
Today, he’s inspired by a range of subjects, from politics to physics and even holds a secondary degree in Engineering. An avid listener and collector of music, Matthew regularly watches bands perform live. He enjoys most sporting activities including football and the occasional frame of snooker.
Matthew attended Camberwell College of the Arts, completing a BA in Graphic Design and specialising in illustration during his final year.
Most images begin by hand, using pencil or ink. The initial sketch is then scanned, coloured and composed on a computer. The human element continues to shine through Matthew's work with the strokes and splatters he applies along the way.
Strong line work is filled in with subtle – sometimes bright – digital colouring for a modern and lively feel. Brush strokes and ink drops add flourishes of texture to the work.
