Ryder is the pseudonym for a talented fine artist who’s using his skills to create enchanting illustrations. His images are full of fun characters, colourful setting and magical narratives. Ryder has worked with a range of children’s and adult publishers, as well as some of the country’s biggest brands.
Growing up in Cheshire, he always loved art and studied it right the way through to degree level. He’s worked as an in-house illustrator at an advertising agency – where tight deadlines were the norm – but today enjoys the freedom that freelancing affords. Gustav Klimt is one of Ryder’s biggest inspirations, and he loves the dreamy and atmospheric music of David Sylvian.
Outside of painting, running is one of his great passions and he’s completed six London marathons. He also loves Porsche cars, and holidays with his family on the Amalfi coast.
Ryder went to university in Manchester and Exeter, completing a degree in Illustration.
“I just let my imagination run wild,” explains Ryder. “I have an ability to paint what I see in my mind’s eye, and work in acrylics which dry quickly for speed, but also give great colour and depth. I always tackle the hardest parts of a painting first, then start to relax.”
Ryder’s work is sophisticated and naïve at the same time. He uses his strong understanding of light, colour, composition and form to help his paintings come to life and connect with people.
