Medical artwork showing the use of methadone in pregnancy

Opioid Crisis

Alex Baker makes a medical artwork showing the use of methadone in pregnancy for a Contemporary OB/GYN cover.

In Alex's the image the pregnant mother is receiving a dose of methadone as part of her stabilisation for medication-assisted therapy. She explains, "There is a correlating rise of infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) and an increase in overdose deaths. Withdrawal for the infants is generally less severe if the mothers are treated with prescribed opioids over illicit use." Read more here.
